April Crime Numbers are In

The crime report for April has been posted and a link is below. Forest Park Southeast was able to cut total crimes by more than 50% from last April. While January was an abnormal month across the whole city, the past three months (Feb-Apr) have all been reductions from monthly totals from 2012. The year-to-date totals for crime in 2013 are 113, where as last year at this point we had already reached 154. Initiatives such as the Neighborhood Ownership Model, bike patrols and block captains are playing an intricate role in crime reduction. Keep up the great work!

We would like to thank volunteers, residents, stakeholders and everyone else involved who worked tirelessly to support the efforts of the Special Business District proposal for Forest Park Southeast. Particularly, we want to thank the Forest Park Southeast Committee to Advance Public Safety for increasing public awareness of the benefits of the Special Business District proposals within the neighborhood. We would relish the opportunity to hear from both those you voted for and against the initiative, on how to move forward in addressing the neighborhoods’ short and long term safety and security needs.

The FPSE Block Captain Initiative 2013 is underway. Do you know a neighbor that is, or are you, a great advocate for your neighborhood or block? Have you ever considered being a Block Captain? If you are interested, or even just curious about what it means to be a Block Captain, this is a session you don’t want to miss. We encourage you to attend the upcoming meeting and training session for 2013.

9^th District Business and Community Leaders,

“We wanted to make you all aware of an increase in “crimes of opportunity” occurring over the last several months in many areas wherein people are leaving their personal belongings (particularly cell phones) laying around on desks, tables and bar tops.

As you all know, for years we’ve reminded the public not to leave valuables in sight within the cabin of your vehicles, or to look around and pay attention to those who may be watching you place a purse, laptop or the like in your trunk before walking away from your auto.

What seems to be the new trend however is the criminals are now making the attempt to blend in to their surroundings.

They’ll frequent places that are open to the public like restaurants, bars, hospitals or a busy office building and sit around giving the appearance that they’re just like you and me and they belong there. They might give you the impression they’re just having a cup coffee on break from a busy day of work or relaxing while shopping. You sit down with your laptop, iPad, cell phone, etc. and relax with no thought of someone watching you with an eye on your property. You’re feeling comfortable with your surroundings, so you decide to leave your table to grab something to-go or use the restroom before leaving…and when you return, your property is gone.

We in law enforcement have had several opportunities recently to view video from hospitals, office buildings or restaurants after an incident has occurred and we’ve watched this new breed of opportunist walk into a workspace or over to a table and pick up what they want and walk away as if it was theirs in the first place; nothing to make them stand out from the crowd.

We would like you to share this information with your employees and coworkers; look around, pay attention to your surroundings, don’t place yourself into a false sense of “it won’t happen here”. Keep your valuables, especially purses and cell phones with you at all times. Train your staff to ask customers to keep these items in their possession without leaving the property on tables, bars or desks.

These types of crimes are preventable with some help from you. We look forward to working with you to continue our mission to make our neighborhoods safe and pleasurable”.

November 27, 2012: Assault – Arrest

FOREST PARK SOUTHEAST NEIGHBORHOOD

During the early morning hours of November 27, 2012 there was an assault involving St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department within the Forest Park Southeast neighborhood. Ninth District Officers were conducting a suspicious vehicle stop at approximately 3:00am in the 4500 block of Chouteau when the driver attempted to ram one of the officers with their vehicle. In self defense, officers fired their weapons. No one was injured. While attempting to flee police, the suspect’s vehicle struck a pole. The suspect was immediately taken into custody at the scene.

This investigation is ongoing. Should additional information become available regarding this incident, we will make sure to alert the Forest Park Southeast community.
