General Tips for Safe Driving

Posted: September 6, 2016 in Crime Tips, Current News

Read some tips on how to avoid being vulnerable when getting in and out of your car and what to do/not do if you are being followed.

If you feel like you are being followed, you should:

  • Call 911 and give them the car description and license plate number.
  • Drive to either 1) a public space or 2) a police station.
  • If you feel trapped by them, honk your horn to get other people’s attention and keep your windows rolled up and doors locked.

If you feel like you are being followed you should not:

  • Start driving erratically. (This can be dangerous)
  • Pull into your own residence. (You don’t want them to know where you live)
  • Stop anywhere unsafe and get out. (This could result in an altercation)

While approaching your car to get in, keep these tips in mind:

  • Have your keys out so you can quickly get in. Spending time fumbling for your keys leaves you more vulnerable.
  • Be aware of your surroundings and any suspicious activity.
  • Look underneath your car from a distance and in the car for anyone who could be waiting for you.
  • As soon as you get in, lock your doors.

General tips:

  • Don’t pick up hitchhikers or hitchhike yourself.
  • When driving somewhere, make sure someone knows where you are going and which routes you are taking.
  • Always have enough gas to get where you are going and back.
  • Don’t leave valuables in plain sight, place them in your trunk before you get to where you are going (if you move valuables around after you reach your destination, people could be watching).
  • Always make sure your car is locked and shut off when you are not occupying it.
  • Always be aware of your surroundings and report any suspicious activity.
